Silk is a raw material from nature and can be used in different contexts and functions in the textile universe.
This material is obtained from the silkworm cocoons that are made through a continuous filament of protein, which, when processed into a yarn, gives rise to a unique fabric.
Silk is a very resistant, soft and shiny fabric and, in addition to being a sustainable fabric (because it comes from natural resources), it gives high quality to the clothes produced with it.
Different types of silks:
- Mulberry Silk: this type of silk is intentionally produced and domesticated, and the activity related to the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk is called sericulture;
- Wild Silk: this raw material is harvested from cocoons found wild in nature. This silk is normally darker and has a slightly rougher feel than mulberry silk.
Due to the controversies that exist around the production of silk, there is now the Peace Silk, wild but certified due to being cruelty-free.
Peace Silk categorizes the silk harvested without causing harm to the silkworm, which lives inside the silk cocoon, unlike traditional silk harvesting methods that involve killing the silkworms while still inside the cocoon, in order to preserve the fiber integrity.

Different uses of silk:
Silk is a light, shiny fabric with a soft touch and is, therefore, considered one of the best fabrics for making shirts, dresses, blouses, scarves and gloves.
Silk fabrics washing care:
Although silk is a very delicate fabric, it can be washed by hand or machine, with some specific care.
If you choose to wash the silk garment by hand, you should use warm water, neutral detergent and wash it briefly. And, drying should be done only with the help of a towel because twisting the silk can cut the fibers of the fabric.
However, if, on the other hand, you prefer to wash your silk garment in the machine, you should use the gentlest cycle available in your washing machine's programming, avoid aggressive detergents with enzymes and, if possible, remove the piece of silk clothing as soon as the wash is over, as leaving this fabric in water or in damp environments can cause this raw material to lose its shine.
Silk is one of the world’s favorite fabrics, especially in women's wardrobe, as it can give a more sensual look if it's a dress made of silk or even a more formal and elegant look if you wear a silk shirt or scarf.
